A model release records permission between parties. An AI identity licence also needs to govern the digital identity asset, its production route and the evidence connecting registered outputs to the permission that covered them.
A conventional release can be enough for conventional production. AI introduces a reusable model, potentially unlimited outputs and new ways for files to separate from the paperwork that authorized them. An AI identity licence therefore needs operational controls as well as signed terms.
Neither a model release nor the commercial licence for an AI tool should be judged by its title. The useful test is whether the actual instrument grants this buyer permission from this person for this use, and whether production can stay inside those limits.
| Question | Model release | AI identity licence |
|---|---|---|
| What does it identify? | The person and permitted image or performance use | The person, buyer, campaign, formats, territory, duration and AI asset version |
| Does it govern AI production? | Only when the actual terms say so, and usually not as an operational control | Face-pack delivery and hosted voice generation are tied to the signed scope |
| Can a third party check an output? | Usually by reviewing the private paperwork | A public receipt can connect a registered release to the licence |
| What happens at expiry? | Depends on the written terms and operations | Future licensed delivery or generation stops, while the recorded status and agreed treatment of published work remain visible |
The name of a document does not determine its legal effect. Counsel should review the actual terms and applicable law.

No. It provides a purpose-built workflow and evidence chain. Counsel should still review the terms and applicable law.
Yes. The comparison is about the mechanism and evidence, not the document title. A release can contain AI terms, but output linkage and generation controls still need to be implemented.
A person’s captured face or voice model can change. Identifying the version shows which asset the permission and output refer to.
